Zinc transporter 8 (ZnT8) is an islet beta-cell secretory membrane protein. ZnT8 autoantibodies (ZnT8A) are present in type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) and are a marker for disease. When combined with established autoantibody markers, including glutamate decarboxylase (GADA), protein tyrosine phosphatase IA2 (IA2A), antibodies to insulin (IAA), and islet cytoplasmic autoantibodies (ICA), the ZnT8 antibody test improves diagnostic sensitivity in suspected cases of type 1 DM.
