Reticulocyte cellular hemoglobin distribution width (CHDWr) indicates the variability in reticulocyte hemoglobin content. CHDWr and mean reticulocyte hemoglobin content (CHr) are calculated from the product of the measured reticulocyte volume and hemoglobin concentration. CHr can be used, along with other reticulocyte indices such as mean reticulocyte corpuscular volume (MCVr) to monitor treatment efficacy for various types of anemia, including sickle cell anemia treated with hydroxyurea, iron-deficiency anemia treated with IV iron, and various types of anemia treated with erythropoietin.
