Alpha-1-acid glycoprotein/Creatinine [Mass Ratio] in Urine
Active
Term Description
The alpha-1-acid glycoprotein/creatinine ratio is used to monitor the effectiveness of renal dialysis. Determinations are expressed in /mg creatinine to compensate for variations in urine concentration.

Part Descriptions
LP15755-9 Alpha-1-acid glycoprotein
Alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP or orosomucoid ORM), is an acute phase reactant glycoprotein found in a number of conditions, and considered a natural anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory agent, particularly with respect to its anti-neutrophil and anti-complement activity. Serum levels increase in response to systemic tissue injury, inflammation or infection. Expression of the AGP gene is regulated through major mediators (glucocorticoids and a cytokine network involving mostly interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumour necrosis factor-α (TNFα), interleukin-6 and IL-6 related cytokines). PMID: 11058758 AGP is used to monitor acute-phase proteins related to inflammatory conditions like RA, Crohn's disease, injuries, burns, malignant neoplasms, and inflammation or infection conditions of unknown etiology. Low serum concentrations may be due to chronic liver diseases or to increased excretion of the protein as in nephritic syndrome.(Lab Partner1) PMID: 11058758

LP32035-5 Creatinine
Creatinine or creatine anhydride, is a breakdown product of creatine phosphate in muscle. The loss of water molecule from creatine results in the formation of creatinine. It is transferred to the kidneys by blood plasma, whereupon it is eliminated by glomular filtration and partial tubular excretion. Creatinine is usually produced at a fairly constant rate and measuring its serum level is a simple test. A rise in blood creatinine levels is observed only with marked damage to functioning nephrons; therefore this test is not suitable for detecting early kidney disease. Creatine and creatinine are metabolized in the kidneys, muscle, liver and pancreas.
