Zirconium [Moles/volume] in Urine
Active
Part Description
LP17263-2 Zirconium
Zirconium, chemical element Zr and atomic number 40, is a lustrous, grey-white, strong transition metal that resembles hafnium, and is mainly used as a refractory and opacifier, and in small amounts as an alloying agent for its strong resistance to corrosion. Materials fabricated from zirconium metal and its oxide (ZrO2) are used in space vehicle parts for their resistance to heat and in some abrasives, such as grinding wheels and sandpaper. Zirconium containing compounds are also used in many biomedical applications such as dental implants and other restorative practices, knee and hip replacements, and middle-ear ossicular chain reconstruction. Zirconium binds urea, a property that has been utilized extensively for renal dialysis patients, as a primary component of the sorbent column dependent dialysate regeneration and recirculation system. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends a 5 mg/m3 time weighted average limit and a 10 mg/m3 short-term exposure limit for air dust. Zirconium compounds have no known biological role and are not considered an industrial health hazard. Reports of zirconium related adverse reactions are rare and there is no evidence that zirconium is carcinogenic or genotoxic. [Wikipedia: Zirconium]
