Buprenorphine (tradename Buprenex), is a long-lasting, high affinity opioid that acts on the same receptors as heroin and morphine but does not produce the same intense high or dangerous side effects. It is used for the treatment of pain and opioid dependence. The major buprenorphine metabolites are norbuprenorphine, buprenorphine-3-glucuronide (B3G), and norbuprenorphine-3-glucuronide (N3G). The analysis of buprenorphine and metabolites is performed to monitor compliance to drug therapy.

Norbuprenorphine is the primary active metabolite of buprenorphine, and its mean steady-state plasma concentration is comparable to or even exceeds that of buprenorphine following sublingual buprenorphine absorption (Kuhlman et al., 1998).
