Urine protein electrophoresis fractions are used, in conjunction with other testing, to find M-bands which can signal monoclonal gammopathies such as multiple myeloma. The urine specimen collections are of an unspecified duration, with random and 24 hour collections being the most common.

Gamma globulins, or Ig's, are a class of serum proteins that can be identified by electrophoresis. The most significant gamma globulins are antibodies. Gamma globulin injections are sometimes given in an attempt to temporarily boost a patient's immunity. Injections are also given to patients who have been exposed to hepatitis A or measles and to patients who lack the ability to produce gamma globulins because of an immune deficiency, such as in X-linked agammaglobulinemia.
