Term Description
This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the Abbot RealTime High Risk HPV test kit which detects 14 high risk HPV genotypes through a primer mix targeting a conserved region of HPV genomes and single-stranded DNA probes. The assay differentiates between HPV 16, HPV 18 and non-HPV 16/18 genotypes (other HR HPV).

HPV type 16 has been associated with low grade cervical abnormalities, cancer precursors, and anogenital cancers. Type 16 is the cause of approximately 50% of cervical cancers worldwide, HPV types 16 and 18 together account for about 70% of cervical cancers.
