LP193324-3 HTLV I p19-I Ab
HTLV-I and HTLV-II are human retroviruses associated with adult T-cell leukemias and lymphomas and HTLV-associated myelopathy. Patients infected with HTLV-I may remain asymptomatic for up to 20 years, with fewer than 5% of infected patients developing myelopathies or adult T-cell leukemia. Adult T-cell leukemia is associated with skin infiltrates and hypercalcemia. HTLV-I virus is tropic for T4 lymphocytes and is transmitted by sexual contact, blood products, injection drug abuse, maternal-fetal transmission, and by breast milk. HTLV-II has some association with neoplasia involving CD8 T lymphocytes. Information from Jacobs and DeMott Laboratory Test Handbook, 5th edition, DS Jacobs, WR DeMott and DK Oxley, 2001.

HTLV-I is an abbreviation for the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1, also called the Adult T-cell lymphoma virus type 1, a virus that has been seriously implicated in several kinds of diseases including HTLV-I-associated myelopathy, Strongyloides stercoralis hyper-infection, and a virus cancer link for leukemia (see adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma). Between one in twenty and one in twenty-five infected persons are thought to develop cancer as a result of the virus.
A closely related virus, HTLV-II shares approximately 70% genomic homology (structural similarity) with HTLV-I.
