The modified Simpson method is commonly used for volume measurements in 2D cardiac imaging. It uses the biplane method of disks to measure left ventricular volume, meaning that the total volume is calculated by adding together the two-dimensional area measurements of the series of circular or elliptical slices that, taken as a whole, represent the ventricle. PMID: 16376782 The volume measurements can then be used in calculations of other parameters related to cardiac function, including ejection fraction, cardiac output and cardiac index.

In cardiovascular physiology, ejection fraction (Ef) is the fraction of blood pumped out of a ventricle with each heart beat. The term ejection fraction applies to both the right and left ventricles; one can speak equally of the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and the right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF).
