Left ventricular Myocardial mass/Body surface area [Mass/Area] by US.2D+Calculated by truncated ellipsoid method
Active
Term Description
The myocardial index is the left ventricular (LV) mass normalized for body size, which can be approximated by different measures including body surface area (BSA) and height. This term represents a BSA-based index. BSA can be calculated by a number of methods including the Mostellar and Du Bois formulas, or in some cases the average adult BSA, 1.73 m2, is used by default. Left ventricular mass calculated by the truncated ellipsoid formula on 2D ultrasound is as follows: 1.05 * Pi * {(b+t)^2 * [2/3 * (a+t)+d-d^3/(3 * (a+t))^2] - b^2 * [2/3 * a + d - d^3/(3 * a^2)]}, where a = distance from the minor axis to the endocardium at the LV apex, b = LV minor radius, t = mean wall thickness, and d = distance from the minor axis to the mitral valve plane. Two-dimensional (2D) imaging is one of three ultrasound modes (2D, M-mode, and Doppler) used for cardiac imaging. 2D imaging is the primary method of cardiac imaging and allows structures to be viewed moving in real time in a cross-section of the heart (two dimensions). It is used to detect abnormal anatomy or motion. The most common cross-sectional views are the parasternal long axis, the parasternal short axis, and the apical view. The gastric or subcostal and suprasternal views are also commonly used. [NCBI Books: NBK2215]
