This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the submitter's Alere TestPack Plus Strep A test kit, which uses a rapid immunoassay for the detection of Group A Streptococcal antigen. The kit needs to come to room temperature if refrigerated (30 minutes specified), then 2- 5 minutes to perform.

Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as Group A Streptococcus (GAS), is a species of gram-positive, coccoid, beta-hemolytic bacteria. It is responsible for a wide variety of both invasive and non-invasive diseases including scarlet fever, pharyngitis, impetigo, cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome, as well as the sequelae of rheumatic fever and acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis.
