Flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) are both synthesized from riboflavin (vitamin B2). FMN and FAD are co-factors in important cellular processess, including energy and lipid metabolism, redox signaling, programmed cell death, and growth regulation. Disturbances in the availability of riboflavin, its conversion to FMN and FAD, and the association of FMN and FAD with flavoenzymes can significantly affect the metabolism of folate, pyridoxine, vitamin K, niacin, and ascorbate and lead to skeletal and central nervous system structural changes.
