5,6-dihydrouracil is the product of the first step in uracil catabolism, and the pattern of the levels of uracil, 5,6-dihydrouracil and other products of uracil catabolism can be used to diagnose defects pyrimidine degradation pathway enzymes. For example, patients with complete dihydropyrimidinase deficiency have significantly elevated 5,6-dihydrouracil and moderately elevated uracil in urine.
