Silver is a naturally-occurring substance that humans are exposed to daily through food, drinking water and air at very low levels. Workplace exposure can also occur. Silver can enter the body through the gastrointestinal tract, lungs and skin. Most of the silver that enters the body is eliminated in the stool, but some may build up in many places in the body. Argyria is a permanent condition in which long-term silver accumulation causes skin and other tissues to turn grey or blue-grey; however, it is thought to be a cosmetic condition. In rare cases, exposure to dust containing relatively high levels of silver compounds, such as in certain chemical manufacturing facilities, may cause breathing problems and lung and throat irritation. Skin contact with silver compounds may also cause mild allergic reactions, such as rash, swelling, and inflammation. Where more specific terms for pleural, peritoneal, synovial fluid, etc. exist, we encourage you to use the more specific terms. In contrast to "Body fld", the System "Asp" in LOINC represents the fluid withdrawn during an aspiration procedure from an abnormal collection of fluid, such as from an abscess or cyst. "Asp" is used for abnormal fluid collections that are aspirated, while "Body fld" is used for named body fluids, such as synovial fluid or peritoneal fluid, that are not inherently pathologic.
