The profile of various pterins in serum, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid is used to diagnose pediatric neurotransmitter diseases caused by defects in the pterin biosynthetic pathway. The results in urine may also be used to differentiate atypical phenylketonuria (PKU) from the classical PKU disease.
