There are a variety of coronary catheters available for different use cases. Different catheters have different combinations of stiffness, diameter, angle and shape. Commonly used catheters are Judkins and Amplatz catheters (abbreviated JL or AL for left-sided catheters and JR or AR for right-sided). Pigtail catheter are named for the tight coil at the end of the catheter that resembles a pig's tail.

The process of inserting a catheter is catheterization. In most uses a catheter is a thin, flexible tube: a soft catheter; in some uses, it is a larger, solid tube: a hard catheter.
