Term Description

Dried blood spot (DBS) specimens have been used for therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) across several classes of drugs including antimicrobials, anticonvulsants and immunosuppressants. DBS specimens are useful for TDM in infants and children due to the small sample volume required. DBS specimens are also useful for outpatient TDM in adults who have been trained to collect their own DBS because most analytes are relatively stable in DBS and the DBS card does not require specialized transportation. Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat pharyngitis, tonsillitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia (especially atypical pneumonias associated with Chlamydia pneumoniae or TWAR), skin and skin structure infections, and, in HIV and AIDS patients to prevent, and to treat, disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex or MAC. In addition, it is sometimes used to treat Legionellosis. Clarithromycin is available under several brand names, for example Biaxin, Klacid, and Claripen. A semisynthetic macrolide antibiotic derived from ERYTHROMYCIN that is active against a variety of microorganisms. It can inhibit protein synthesis in bacteria by reversibly binding to the 50S ribosomal subunits. This inhibits the translocation of aminoacyl transfer-RNA and prevents peptide chain elongation.
