Dietary fiber, also known as roughage or bulk, includes the parts of plant foods the body can't digest or absorb. Fiber isn't digested but instead it passes relatively intact through the stomach, small intestine, colon, and out of the body. Fiber is commonly classified as soluble, which dissolves in water, or insoluble, which doesn't dissolve.Total fiber includes both. Most plant-based foods, such as oatmeal and beans, contain both soluble and insoluble fiber. A high-fiber diet has many benefits which include: 1) helping to maintain bowel health, 2) lowering cholesterol, 3) helping control blood sugar levels, and 4) aiding in achieving healthy weight.
