Cerium [Mass/volume] in Blood
Active
Term Description
Cerium nitrate has been used since 1976, usually in combination with silver sulphadiazine, as a topical antiseptic agent for the treatment of severe cutaneous burns. It binds and denatures the lipid protein complex liberated from burnt skin that is responsible for the immunosuppression associated with major cutaneous burns. It has only limited antimicrobial properties. Cerium is measured to study systemic uptake. PMID: 15955636
Part Description
LP206561-5 Cerium
Cerium (Ce) is a rare metal that combines with oxygen to form CeO2 nanoparticles (nanoceria). Nanoceria have a highly reactive surface area for neutralization of radicals and can reversibly bind oxygen and shift oxidation states (Ce3+/Ce4+), which make them potentially useful as therapeutic antioxidants for diseases associated with oxidative stress. However, pro-oxidant effects have also been associated with nanoceria. The antioxidant versus pro-oxidant effects may depend on the biologic characteristics of different nanoceria, including method of synthesis and particle size; research in these areas is ongoing.
