LP208532-4 Radial strain.max
Strain is defined as the deformation of a solid object in response to an applied force. Cardiac strain has multiple components, such as circumferential, longitudinal, and radial, and strain can be either perpendicular or parallel (shear) to the force that is applied. Principal strain is the direction of greatest deformation. Strain is calculated as the change in length over a particular time period relative to the original length and is expressed as a percent. Circumferential and longitudinal strain are typically negative, meaning shortening, while radial strain is normally a positive value, indicating lengthening. The strain rate is the change in strain over time and has the unit of measure s^-1. PMID: 21406664

LP208532-4 Radial strain.max
During myocardial contraction, as the wall shortens, it also thickens and warrants assessment of all parameters as useful for evaluation of contractile function: positive strain (radial thickening), negative strain (circumferential shortening and longitudinal shortening). Radial mechanics of the heart are reflected by the myocardial shortening and thickening. Parasternal short-axis and apical views from Doppler-determined strain measurements are used for recording radial strains. Radial strain has been found to be altered after longitudinal and circumferential mechanics during the ischemic cascade, occurring only in the presence of flow-limiting stenosis during dobutamine. Radial strains may be significantly decreased after infarction and lowest in the infarcted segments. Radial strains, alone, are not strong predictors of infarct size. Values for radial strain are positive. PMID: 20436854 PMID: 21406664

LP6574-0 US.2D
Two-dimensional (2D) imaging is one of three ultrasound modes (2D, M-mode, and Doppler) used for cardiac imaging. 2D imaging is the primary method of cardiac imaging and allows structures to be viewed moving in real time in a cross-section of the heart (two dimensions). It is used to detect abnormal anatomy or motion. The most common cross-sectional views are the parasternal long axis, the parasternal short axis, and the apical view. The gastric or subcostal and suprasternal views are also commonly used. [NCBI Books: NBK2215]
