West Nile virus Kunjin strain is a mosquito-borne virus that affects humans and horses and is one of the two etiologic agents of human arboviral encephalitis in Australia (the second is Murray Valley encephalitis virus). Human West Nile Kunjin infections are primarily asymptomatic, and cases of encephalitis mainly existed in northwestern Australia until 2011. In 2011, extensive flooding in Eastern Australia provided ideal conditions for mosquito breeding, which led to a major outbreak of equine encephalitis. The responsible agent was West Nile virus New South Wales 2011 (WNV NSW2011), a virulent strain of West Nile Kunjin that resulted in 10-15% mortality of infected horses. Since 2011, symptomatic West Nile Kunjin human infections have increased on the southeastern side of Australia, close to major urban areas on the eastern seaboard of New South Wales, but equine cases still far outnumber human cases.
