A measure of the attenuation of the ultrasound signal (loss of energy) as it travels through and returns from the liver at 3.5 MHz, often reported simultaneously with liver stiffness LOINC 77615-3. Based on the principle that ultrasound propagation is affected by tissue fat content, the ultrasound attenuation measurement, referred to as Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP), is a measure of liver fat content (steatosis) and expressed in dB/m. Increasing steatosis is associated with higher levels of signal attenuation. PMID: 22404722
