Part Description
LP203078-3 Lysine intake
Lysine is a basic amino acid that plays a major role in calcium absorption and the production of hormones, enzymes, and antibodies. It is essential in humans, meaning the body cannot synthesize it and thus it must be obtained from the diet. Lack of lysine (hypolysinemia) can result in niacin deficiency and cause pellagra. Hyperlysinemia (elevated lysine levels) is an inherited condition characterized by elevated lysine blood levels, caused by the shortage of the enzyme that breaks down lysine. Hyperlysinemia typically causes no health problems. Dietary sources of lysine include eggs, meat, soy, beans and peas, cheese, and fish such as cod.
