Part Description
LP203164-1 Phenylalanine intake
Phenylalanine (Phe) is an essential aromatic amino acid. Phenylalanine is converted to tyrosine, another amino acid needed to make protein and thyroid hormones. It is also needed to make dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine, brain chemicals that influence energy and mental health. The L-form of Phe is incorporated into proteins, while the D-form acts as a painkiller. Egg whites, nuts and seeds, and meat and fish are rich sources. Phenylketonuria (also called PKU), is a rare inherited disorder that causes phenylalanine to build up in the body. People with PKU need to follow a diet that significantly limits phenylalanine.
