Term Description
Resting metabolic rate (RMR), sometimes called resting energy expenditure (EE), is commonly measured by indirect calorimetry, which requires quantification of oxygen consumption and sometimes carbon dioxide production while a patient is resting. Indirect calorimetry techniques for measuring RMR are commonly used in research and clinical applications. PMCID: PMC3928639 Results are used to determine minimal energy requirements for patients receiving nutritional therapy. RMR estimates are also used to counsel patients regarding caloric intake in weight loss programs.

The standard resting metabolic rate (RMR)), by convention, is a reference baseline oxygen consumption constant of 3.5 mL O2/kg/min and is approximately equivalent to 1 kcal/kg/h or 4.184 kJ/kg/h. It is used along with the measured, estimated or reported activity (exercise) metabolic rate to calculate the metabolic equivalent of task (MET).
