Escherichia coli shiga-like toxin 1+2 [Presence] in Stool by Immunoassay
Active
Term Description
This assay detects the presence of, but does not differentiate between, Escherichia coli shiga-like toxins 1 and 2, and is intended for use as an aid in the diagnosis of enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) infections. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the submitter's Premier EHEC test kit.
Part Description
LP201810-1 Escherichia coli shiga-like toxin 1+2
Shiga-like toxin is generated by some strains of Escherichia coli, known as Stx-producing E. coli (STEC). Shiga-like toxins are named for their similarity to the AB5-type shiga toxin produced by the bacteria Shigella dysenteriae. There are two primary types, known as Stx1 (also Stx1a or SLT1) and Stx2 (also Stx2a or SLT2). Variants of Stx1 and Stx2 have been identified but they are rarely found in clinical specimens and few are clinically significant. PMID: 25530917 Shiga-like toxins are associated with hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) in which patients present with thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and kidney failure. PMID: 6131302
