Oligosaccharidoses are a group of autosomal recessively inherited lysosomal disorders of glycoprotein catabolism. There is no treatment available at this time for these disorders. This assay tests for the activities of alpha-neuraminidase, alpha-mannosidase, beta-mannosidase, alpha-n-acetyl-galactosaminidase, beta-galactosidase, and alpha-fucosidase, and results are reported as an overall interpretation based on the pattern of activity that is found.

An oligosaccharide (from the Greek oligos, a few, and sacchar, sugar) is a saccharide polymer containing a small number (typically three to nine) of simple sugars (monosaccharides). Oligosaccharides can have many functions; for example, they are commonly found on the plasma membrane of animal cells where they can play a role in cell-cell recognition.
