Latex that is used industrially is obtained from the rubber tree. Processing of the sap creates a latex concentrate that contains 1% allergenic protein manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), and although only a small amount of the 1% is present in the final product it is enough to cause allergic responses in patients sensitive to latex. MnSOD has been designated Hev b 10. The rHev b 10 protein is a minor latex antigen.[Phadia Occup Allergen: rhev-b-1-latex] PMID: 11167363 Latex recombinant rHev b 10 is a cross-reactive allergen of latex. MnSOD from H. brasiliensis was cloned and expressed in E. coli. Immunoblot tests of patients sensitive to latex have been shown to react to Hev b 10. Even though Hev b 10 is a minor latex allergen, IgE antibodies that bind to it also have been found to bind to the MnSODs of Aspergillus fumigatus demonstrating a latex allergy to mold allergy connection.
