GlycA was first seen as a signal on a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum for lipoprotein particle analysis. GlycA was found to emanate from a subset of glycan N-acetylglucosamine residues on enzymatically glycosylated acute phase proteins. That signal was thought possible to provide an advantageous marker for systemic inflammation. The additional acute phase proteins included in the signal are alpha-1-acid glycoprotein, haptoglobin, alpha-1-antitrypsin, alpha-1-antichymotrypsin and transferrin. GlycA biomarker levels correlates with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, fibrinogen and interleukin-6. GlycA has notable analytical and clinical attributes that may supplement or improve upon current systemic inflammatory markers including for rheumatoid arthritis.
