This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, bioMerieux's VIDAS beta-2 Microglobulin assay, which is intended for the quantitative measurement of beta-2 Microglobulin in human serum, plasma, or urine.

LP14907-7 Beta-2-Microglobulin
β2-Microglobulin (β2-M) is a low-molecular weight protein that is the light chain of the class I MHC (major histocompatibility complex) antigens. Present in all nucleated cells and almost totally reabsorbed and catabolized by the proximal tubules, it is a marker of immune activation and proximal tubular function and found in nearly all body fluids. Because it accumulates with renal dysfunction and deposits in tissues, β2-M is a cause of dialysis related amyloidosis. Levels are also elevated in conditions such as chronic inflammation, liver disease, renal dysfunction, and some acute viral infections. It is found in many hematological malignancies and thus a valuable treatment monitor and prognostic marker, particularly for multiple myeloma. [Tietz] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
