This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, bioMerieux's VIDAS Myoglobin assay, which is intended for the quantitative detection of myoglobin in human serum or plasma.

Myoglobin is a very sensitive marker (90-100%) for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) but lacks specificity. Serum concentrations of myoglobin increase above the reference interval as early as 1 hour after MI, with peak sensitivity in the range of 2-12 hr, suggesting that serum myoglobin reflects the early course of myocardial necrosis. Myoglobin is rapidly cleared and thus has a substantially reduced clinical sensitivity after 12 hr. For detecting AMI, myoglobin must be measured within the first 0-4 hr, the time period in which CK-MB and possibly cardiac troponin are still within their reference range.
