Term Description

The response of the tumor to neoadjuvant treatment, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy before resection is associated with significant downstaging and improved prognosis. These specimens require close gross examination and additional blocking to demonstrate tumor. The degree of tumor regression has been shown to correlate with prognosis. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the Colorectal Cancer Structured Reporting Protocol (2nd Edition, 2012) developed by the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA).
