The quantitative (Ct) value of the IS481 insertional element DNA sequence of the Bordetella pertussis and B. holmesii genomes detected in clinical specimens or culture isolates. B. bronchiseptica may also be detected in this assay but is primarily an animal pathogen and rarely found in humans. This assay does not differentiate between the Bordetella species. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the Antimicrobial Resistance Laboratory Network's (ARLN) multiplex real-time PCR assay.

LP247783-6   Bordetella pertussis+bronchiseptica+holmesii IS481
A repetitive insertion sequence, IS481, has been found to be present in up to 100 copies within the genome of B. pertussis. In B. holmesii, 8-10 copies of this insertion sequence can be found. PMID: 11326023 On rare occasion, the B. bronchiseptica genome may contain a copy of this sequence. Thus, all these species may test positive in assays targeting the IS481 sequence. Concurrent culturing is used to differentiate species from B. pertussis and confirm the organism, while targeted DNA testing allows preliminary results to be reported the same day that the specimen is received.
