3,4-Dimethylmethcathinone (3,4-DMMC) and 4-Methylethcathinone (4-MEC) are synthetic cathinones categorized as designer drugs or substances of abuse. Their chemical structure resembles the stimulant mephedrone. Their effects on the body are similar to phenethylamine, amphetamine, and the cathinone class. They are mainly used for social purposes but are also used for their stimulant properties. Effects of synthetic cathinones depend on the individual, the dosage of drug administered and the route of administration but the primary effects which make them attractive to users are increased alertness, sociability, effectiveness in work, euphoria, intense physical and sensory pleasure and a decreased appetite. The standard practice of insufflation combined with ingestion causes immediate and sustained intoxication. The most common adverse effects are cardiac and neurologic.
