HIV-2 is a lentivirus discovered a few years after the more widespread HIV-1. HIV-1 and HIV-2 have the same modes of transmission and are associated with similar opportunistic infections and AIDS. However, patients infected with HIV-2 generally have lower viral loads and progress to clinical disease more slowly. As of this writing, the incidence of HIV-2 infection is very low in the U.S., with only a few newly diagnosed cases each year. HIV-2 transmission is primarily restricted to areas in West Africa and in areas with large numbers of immigrants from West Africa. Although HIV-1 and HIV-2 share similarities in transmission and pathogenesis, they are only distantly related.

Prior to 1986, this was called human T-lymphotropic virus type III/lymphadenopathy-associated virus (HTLV-III/LAV). From 1986-1990, it was called HIV and since 1991, the two species have been designated HIV-1 and HIV-2.
