Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is one species of Erysipelothrix, which are facultative anaerobic, gram-positive rods that are distributed worldwide and have been isolated from both birds and mammals. Other species of Erysipelothrix are E. tonsillarum, E. sp strain 1, and E. sp strain 2. The clinical disease caused by these organisms is called "erysipelas" in animals and "erysipeloid" in humans. Disease caused by E. rhusiopathiae that affects swine and turkeys has the most economic impact. Swine erysipelas is most often caused by serotypes 1a, 1b and 2, which are all members of the rhusiopathiae species. Three presentations are recognized: acute, subacute, and chronic. Up to half of healthy pigs may harbor E. rhusiopathiae in tonsils and lymphatic tissue. Acute erysipelas outbreaks are likely due to shedding by subclinically affected animals in urine, feces, saliva, and nasal secretions. PMID: 20719987
