Part Description
LP251137-8 Brachyspira hyodysenteriae
Veterinary Medicine:
Brachyspira hyodysenteriae is a loosely coiled, gram-negative, oxygen tolerant, motile, anaerobic spirochete that causes swine dysentery (SD). SD, a severe mucohemorrhagic diarrheal disease, is usually seen in pigs that weigh between 15 and 70 kilograms, but can also affect adult and suckling pigs. SD is transmitted when fecal matter containing B. hyodysenteriae is ingested. When B. hyodysenteriae is grown on blood agar, there is a characteristic complete hemolysis that distinguishes it from other less pathogenic or nonpathogenic spirochetes. To definitively diagnose an infection with B. hyodysenteriae, the spirochete must be cultured, isolated and identified using biochemical tests or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. The current treatments for SD includes tylosin, tiamulin and valnemulin.[http://vri.cz/docs/vetmed/47-4-104.pdf]
