Part Description
LP262519-4 Clostridium perfringens etx gene
Clostridium perfringens is a gram positive, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium. It is classified into five types designated A through E. Four toxins are produced by C. perfringens that have lethal, necrotic and cytotoxic capabilities. The four toxins are known as alpha-toxin (CPA), beta-toxin (CPB), epsilon-toxin (ETX) and iota-toxin (ITX). PMID: 22069542 When toxins produced by C. perfringens are mixed in different combination, sixteen toxins can be produced. Pathogenesis due to C. perfringens is due almost always to the production of one or more of its toxins. CPA is encoded by the cpa gene that is located on the chromosome and is produced by all strains of C. perfringens. CPA is an enzyme that breaks down phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin which damages membrane phospholipids and leads to the lysis of cells. CPA also cause hemolysis, activates the arachidonic cascade and inflammation cascade which induce vasoconstriction. There is no definitive evidence that CPA is involved with enteritis, abomasitis and/or enterotoxemia in cattle, horses, goats, and pigs. In humans, studies support that CPA is the main toxin believed to cause gas gangrene, a disease involving extensive local tissue damage and necrosis that leads to shock and death. Gas gangrene also occurs in domestic animals including sheep, cattle, goats, and horses. PMID: 24511335
