Porcine teschovirus (PTV) is a non-enveloped RNA virus with thirteen known PTV serotypes that only infect pigs and wild boars. Symptoms of infection include diarrhea, pneumonia, pericarditis and myocarditis though asymptomatic infections do occur. Infection with some strains can lead to stillbirth, mummified fetus, embryonic death and infertility. The porcine teschovirus-1 (PTV-1) serotype is the causative agent for teschovirus encephalomyelitis which is a disease with high morbidity and mortality in all age groups. Infection with the PTV-2, -3 and -5 serotypes causes Talfan disease and has symptoms much milder than teschovirus encephalomyelitis and affects mostly younger pigs. PTV can survive a wide range of pH which allows it to survive in liquid manure for extended periods of time. PTV can be inactivated with sodium chlorite, by heating it in the presence of halide ions and with 70% ethanol. PTV is transmitted by the fecal-oral route. There have been no reports of swine to human transmission. PTV-1 is known to have occurred in Europe, Africa, Haiti and Canada. Infections with strains that produce milder symptoms have occurred worldwide. PTV is diagnosed using virus neutralization, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
