Certolizumab is a monoclonal antibody conjugated to polyethylene glycol used to treat Crohn's Disease (CD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Certolizumab pegol binds to tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), a pro-inflammatory cytokine that is implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of immunological diseases including CD and RA. TNFα mediates the signature inflammation-induced joint damage in RA. The reduction of TNFα alleviates symptoms of RA, CD and other immunologic diseases. TNFα-inhibitors have been hugely successful in treating immunological diseases. In spite of the positive impact TNFα-inhibitors have had there is still variability in response to their use including loss of response over time and drug tolerance.
