A systematic way of diagnosing the sub-types of ischemic stroke was developed as part of the Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST). Intervention for stroke patients must occur quickly and sometimes before diagnostic testing can be completed, and the TOAST classification gives clinicians a way to categorize the probable stroke sub-type based on clinical and imaging findings before definitive diagnostic testing is completed. PMID: 7678184 Since its publication in 1993, the TOAST classification has been used extensively in research and especially therapeutic studies related to stroke. In addition, its classification of probable small versus large vessel disease may help guide treatment decisions. PMID: 16146496
