Alanine/Lysine [Mass Ratio] in DBS
Active
Term Description
Elevated alanine levels is suggestive of a metabolic disorder. Since alanine levels can fluctuate depending on dietary intake, the alanine to lysine ratio is used to adjust for dietary variation. Normal alanine to lysine ratio is less than 3:1. An elevated alanine along with a elevated alaine:lysine ratio (>3) suggests true hyperalaninemia. PMID: 18243024
Part Descriptions
LP15331-9 Alanine
Alanine is a non-essential amino acid that exists as two distinct enantiomers: L-alanine and D-alanine. Alanine is one of the primary amino acids (secondary to leucine) used for protein construction. It is produced from pyruvate, exists in high levels in plasma, and is involved in the metabolism of sugar and organic acids.[PubChem: Alanine] Alanine acts as a substrate for alanine aminotransferase (ALT), an enzyme commonly measured to determine liver health. Increased alanine levels are seen in patients with lactic acidosis, carbamoyl phosphate synthetase deficiency, histidinemia, hyperprolinemia, and ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency. In patients with a mitochondrial disease, elevated alanine levels are primarily seen during times of physiologic stress or regression. PMID: 18243024

LP263693-6 Lysine
Lysine is an essential basic amino acid that plays a major role in calcium absorption and the production of hormones, enzymes, and antibodies. Lack of lysine can result in niacin deficiency and cause the pellagra. Other diseases associated with lysine include hyperlysinemia, lysine intolerance, carbamoyl phosphate synthetase deficiency, and saccharopinuria (saccharopine is an intermediate in the metabolism of lysine).
