13655-6 Leukocytes [Presence] in Stool by Light microscopy
Part Descriptions
LP14419-3 Leukocytes
Leukocytes or white blood cells (WBCs) are immune cells that fight infection, neoplasms and other inflammatory conditions, and mediate allergic responses. There are five types of WBCs normally present in the circulation that are all derived from a similar stem cell in the bone marrow. The five type of WBCs are divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of granules in the cytoplasm. The granulocytes include the neutrophils, basophils and eosinophils. The non-granulocytes include the lymphocytes and the monocytes. The neutrophils fight infection by ingesting and digesting bacteria. Eosinophils and basophils respond to allergic reactions and are capable of ingesting antigen-antibody complexes. Monocytes phagocytose bacteria and release interferon to stimulate the immune system. Lymphocytes are divided into T-cells and B-cells. T-cell immunity is cellular and involves the activation of phagocytes and B-cell immunity uses antibodies to fight infection. Both elevated and low leukocyte counts can be markers of infection and malignancy, and low leukocyte counts are associated with a variety of primary and secondary immunodeficiencies, depending on the WBC type(s) that are out of range. 33668-5 Erythrocytes [Presence] in Stool
Part Descriptions
LP14304-7 Erythrocytes
Erythrocytes or red blood cells (RBCs) are the cells in the circulation that carry oxygen to and remove carbon dioxide from the tissues throughout the body. They are produced in the bone marrow in response to erythropoietin where they transition through six stages over a seven day period. When they are released into the circulation, their nucleus has been extruded and they measure 6-8 microns in diameter. The lifespan of RBCs is about 120 days. When the RBC ages the cell membrane becomes less pliable and tears as they cell travels through the micro vessels of the body. The damaged RBCs are removed from the circulation by the spleen. Variations in number, shape and size of RBCs are indicative of many diseases and disorders. There are many factors that may lead to decreased numbers of RBCs including hemorrhage, hemolysis, iron or vitamin deficiency, marrow failure and more. Larger than normal RBCs may be indicative of liver disease while smaller than normal RBCs are seen in thalassemias and other anemias.(Mosby's manual of diagnostic and laboratory tests, Kathleen Deska Pagana; Timothy James Pagana, Elsevier St. Louis, Mo ©2010)

17773-3 Yeast [Presence] in Stool by Light microscopy
Part Descriptions
LP29134-1 Yeast
Fungi are eukaryotic microorganisms which manifest as yeasts, molds or a combination. Yeasts start as individual cells that reproduce by budding. Molds, which are long filaments or hyphae, grow by apical extension. Both yeasts and molds are heterotrophic and digest their food externally by absorptive nutrition. Taxonomically, yeast are characterized by their size and shape, the presence or absence of capsules, conidiogenesis (the process of daughter cell formation), presence of sexual spores, the formation of pseudo-and true hyphae and physiologic data. Species are differentiated based on the ability to assimilate and ferment carbon sources, and to utilize nitrate as nitrogen. Some opportunistic fungal pathogens found in humans are dimorphic. They grow as mycelium in nature and reproduce as yeast in the body. One example is Candida which can quickly transform from yeast to the hyphal phase in humans; this process helps it invade host tissue. [NCBI Books:NBK8125]

625-4 Bacteria identified in Stool by Culture
Part Descriptions
LP14082-9 Bacteria
One of the three domains of life (the others being Eukarya and Archaea), also called Eubacteria. They are unicellular prokaryotic microorganisms which generally possess rigid cell walls and multiply by cell division. They exhibit three principal forms: round or coccal, rodlike or bacillary, and spiral or spirochetal. Bacteria can be classified by their response to oxygen (aerobic, anaerobic, or facultatively anaerobic) and by how they obtain their energy (chemotrophic, i.e. via a chemical reaction or phototrophic, via a light reaction). In addition, chemotrophs obtain their energy from chemicals, lithotrophic from inorganic compounds and organotrophic from organic compounds. Bacteria are also classified by the source carbon that they utilize: heterotrophic, from organic sources or autotrophic, from carbon dioxide. They can also be classified by whether or not they stain (based on the structure of their cell walls) with crystal violet dye: gram-negative or gram-positive.

LP6209-3 Culture
A culture is a laboratory procedure where a sample of tissue or fluid from a patient is placed in or on growth media (agar, broth) to induce the proliferation of potentially infectious agents (bacteria, fungi, viruses). The presence of growth is documented and the organisms are identified to determine whether or not a pathogen is present.
Once a pathogen is identified, specific testing techniques can be used to determine drug susceptibilities for assistance in treatment. [https://courses.lumenlearning.com/boundless-microbiology/chapter/culturing-bacteria/]

6331-3 Campylobacter sp identified in Stool by Organism specific culture
Part Descriptions
LP16647-7 Campylobacter sp
Campylobacter species is a gram-negative comma or S-shaped motile bacteria. Most infections occur from eating raw or undercooked poultry or by touching a contaminated object. Other sources of Campylobacter include water, animals, and unpasteurized milk. Symptoms begin 2-5 days after being exposed and include bloody diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Some people are asymptomatic. Campylobacter can spread to the bloodstream and cause life-threatening illness in immunocompromised patients. C jejuni is the primary species found in campylobacter infections. Campylobacter is identified in stool, body tissue, and fluid cultures.[https://www.cdc.gov/campylobacter/faq.html]

28549-4 Yersinia sp identified in Stool by Organism specific culture
Part Descriptions
LP16783-0 Yersinia sp
Yersinia sp are Gram-negative oval or rod-shaped bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae. They are facultative anaerobes. While some species are motile below 37°C, all Yersinia species are nonmotile at 37°C and above. Most yersiniosis in humans in the United States is caused by Y. enterocolitica which most commonly manifests as fever, abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea in young children. In older children and adults it is sometimes confused with appendicitis as right-sided abdominal pain and fever are its primary symptoms. Contaminated food, especially raw or undercooked pork products, is the most frequent source of infection; unpasteurized milk and untreated water are also common sources. Only about one culture-confirmed Y. enterocolitica infection per 100,000 persons occurs annually in the U. S. Y. pestis was the pathogenic agent of the plague; rodents are its primary hosts and it is is transmitted to human through flea bites. Other Yersinia organisms have also been identified.
