Version 2.77

Term Description

This term represents a hepatic artery chemoembolization procedure for treating a liver tumor. In the chemoembolization procedure, both chemotherapy and an embolic agent are delivered simultaneously.

Part Descriptions

LP262710-9   {Imaging modality}
{Imaging modality} is used for image-guided procedures, where the particular type of imaging used is not specified in the orderable. For example, liver biopsies may be performed under ultrasound or CT guidance, and the particular modality used may be at the discretion of the operator. In such cases, {Imaging modality} indicates imaging guidance not further specified. This concept corresponds to the RP (radiology procedure) concept used in RSNA's RadLex Playbook. LP266629-7   Guidance for chemoembolization for tumor
Chemoembolization of tumors uses three dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to both block arteries that feed the tumor and deliver chemotherapy agents directly to the tumor. CBCT imaging is able to give detailed visualization of tumor vascularity, location, size, and volume. Beads infused with chemotherapy drug such as doxorubicin are combined with contrast and delivered to the arteries that feed the tumor and block blood from nourishing it. The chemotherapy agent then disseminates into the tumor. A visual verification of devascularization of the vessels feeding the tumor and saturation of the tumor with contrast agent is mandatory to ensure full treatment of the tumor burden and predict tumor response.[http://pubs.rsna.org/doi/pdf/10.1148/radiol.14131925] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
