Several species of Bartonella have been associated with culture-negative endocarditis, with B. henselae and B. quintana being most common. Because cultures are sterile, diagnosis relies on other methodologies such as molecular techniques. PMID: 11897074 Such infections may involve native or prosthetic valves.

Facultative intracellular parasites, Bartonella species can infect healthy people but are considered especially important as opportunistic pathogens. Bartonella are transmitted by insect vectors such as fleas, sand flies and mosquitoes. At least eight Bartonella species or subspecies are known to infect humans.
