Toluidine blue is a blue cationic (basic) dye that stains multiple substances, including heparin, proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans. Toluidine blue identifies mast cells by virtue of the heparin in their cytoplasmic granules and cartilage by the presence of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans.
