The principal piece of the spermatozoa is the long portion of the tail between the midpiece and the endpiece. A fibrous sheath with tightly integrated sperm-specific glycolytic enzymes surround the principal piece. The enzyme is critical to glycolysis, which supplies the sperm with most of the energy needed to swim. Though the shape of the sperm head is an important factor for how fast a sperm can swim, the length of the principal piece relative to the remaining sperm is an additional factor that influences its swimming velocity.
