Spermatozoa typically have structures called cytoplasmic droplets (CD) that contain a variety of substances including lipids, lipoproteins, and hydrolytic enzymes. CDs are usually located in the proximal part of the midpiece, are less that 1/3 the size of the sperm head, and are less than two microns in diameter. Large amounts of cytoplasm in the midpiece is called excess residual cytoplasm (ERC). The hydrolytic enzymes in the ERC are responsible for the production of reaction oxygen species (ROS), which in turn affect sperm motility, morphology, and fertilization potential.
