Part Descriptions
LP267096-8 Gram positive bacilli identified
The gram stain is used to differentiate bacteria based on the amount of peptidoglycan in their cell walls. Bacteria with a high concentration of peptidoglycan will stain purple with the gram stain and are called gram positive. Gram negative bacteria have a low concentration of peptidoglycan in their cell walls and stain red with the gram stain. Some genera of gram positive bacteria include Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Lactobacillus, and Mycoplasma. Many species of these and other gram negative bacteria are pathogenic and cause many illnesses including Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium difficile in hospital-acquired infections and multi-drug resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae in communities around the world.[http://www.highveld.com/microbiology/gram-negative-bacteria.html] PMID: 19766888
