Veterinary medicine:
Porcine kobuvirus (PKoV) is a non-enveloped RNA virus that belongs in the family Picornaviridae. Of the three species described for the genus Kobuvirus, the Aichivirus C (AiV-C) is the only species that infects swine. The virus is transmitted by the fecal-oral route and the extensiveness of infection in domestic pigs ranges from 13-99%. Wild boars are a suspected reservoir of infection of domestic swine. PKoV/AiV-C has been isolated in swineherds in many countries across the world, including China, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Italy, Hungary, Czech Republic, US, Netherlands, Kenya, Uganda, and Brazil. In China, a herd of piglets infected with PKoV/AiV-C experienced symptoms including diarrhea, dehydration, and vomiting. PKoV/AiV-C is believed to require other pathogens in order to cause diarrhea in infected pigs, including transmissible gastroenteritis and rotavirus. While PKoV/AiV-C has never been cultured, there are a number of laboratory methods that are able to detect its RNA or antigens, including reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), antigen capture enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), electron microscopy, and serum neutralization. There are no vaccines available for PKoV/AiV-C or in development.http://www.cfsph.iastate.edu/pdf/shic-factsheet-porcine-kobuvirus
